OB/GYN Residency Program Clinic
The OB/GYN Residency Program has flourished over the past four years, and the program is now at a crucial point where there is a need to grow by opening a standalone OB/GYN Residency Program Clinic. In 2022, Marian set a new record for infant deliveries, totaling 3,290 (an average of 274 deliveries a month). The new 8,700-square-foot clinic will provide women’s health care services to a vastly diverse and medically vulnerable patient population and a significant benefit of the clinic will be the addition of translators in Spanish and Mixteco languages. According to the US Census, 71% of the City of Santa Maria’s population identify as Latinx or Hispanic, and 58% speak Spanish as their primary language.
Medically indigent and underserved patients comprise more than two-thirds of Marian’s annual OB/GYN patient volume, which includes care provided to local farmworkers. Establishing a permanent home for the OB/GYN Residency Program, which trains physician residents to provide essential prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum services to thousands of Central Coast residents, will help provide a pipeline to recruit and retain OB/GYNs to the area, and will alleviate the local shortage of OB/GYN physicians. Furthermore, the Santa Maria Valley currently has only 12 Dignity Health OB/GYNs (and 10 OB/GYN physician residents) for a population of 250,000. Additional services offered at the clinic will include birthing education, postpartum and lactation support, perinatal mood disorder support, early parenting support, nutrition counseling, women’s preventive care, as well as acute and chronic management of gynecologic conditions.
