New ECMO medical technology now saving lives at Marian

After testing positive for COVID-19, Matt Tracy was admitted to Marian Regional Medical Center in October of 2021 and was quickly placed on a ventilator. Matt continued to deteriorate and was on the verge of death, but his care team had one more card to play—extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy, the life-saving treatment known as ECMO.

The ECMO medical technology at Marian Regional Medical Center is a reality due to a $260,000 donation from the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation. This sophisticated life support technology pumps and oxygenates the patient’s blood outside the body, allowing the lungs to rest and recover.

After more than 63 days in the hospital, Matt is alive and well today, crediting his amazing recovery to the ECMO treatment he received and the care provided by the Marian Regional Medical Center staff.

Jessica Nunez named Day of Hope 2022 Ambassador

Jessica Nunez with son, JacobJessica Nunez, a Santa Maria native, leads a very active life. She rarely slows down, whether hiking, going to the beach, working two jobs, or caring for her 15-year-old son, Jacob. Despite her fast-paced life, Jessica diligently attended her standard annual woman’s wellness exams, no matter how busy she was.

Her life changed during her 2021 appointment. What was supposed
to be a routine check-up turned serious when her physician felt a lump. Further testing was ordered, including a biopsy and genetics, which revealed that the 36-year-old had stage 2 breast cancer (BRCA 1)—a frightening moment, full of unknowns, tears, and confusion that Jessica will never forget!
